Review:
A thief who has the most wonderful luck suddenly loses it while travelling to other lands, and so is coerced into stealing a book from 'the house at the end of the world', a job he might otherwise not have taken on. The sight of the sky on fire, and a meeting with a strange old man come his way before he reaches the house. Once inside the house, Althalus, our thief, finds that he cannot just leave. After many lessons from a cat with emerald eyes, Althalus is once again prepared to go out into the world, but is he still just a thief?
I admit that I bought this book only because I enjoyed the Belgariad and the Mallorean (by the same authors) so much, and was not too sure what to expect, but I found this book to be on a par with the books about Belgarion and his family. I would highly recommend this to people who enjoy a more involved fantasy novel. Although it is longer than many (913 pages) it is a lot of fun. Many descriptions of Althalus' reactions could strike a chord in those of us honest enough to admit it!
