Review: This book is Volume One of the Dragonlance Chronicles, and is part of the Dragonlance Saga.

The book is based on the adventures of six friends, who reunite in their hometown of Solace after spending five years exploring the continent of Ansalon.

They are all looking forward to a pleasant homecoming, but the appearance of two barbarians and a blue crystal staff launch them into a run through the night, away from the town of Solace, across the continent of Ansalon, and finally ending at a ruined city now overrun by darkness, where rumors of great armies in the north are confirmed.

But they find far more than that, as they are visited by a goddess, and learn that the great dragons of the past, thought only to be legends, have returned to the world, led by the evil goddess Takhisis. But the ancient gods, led by Paladine, have also returned, and are fighting against the armies of darkness.

Based on the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game, this book combines both action and story-telling to form one of the six great Dragonlance novels ever written. (All five of the others are sequels to this book.)

This book was well written, with good character development, a smooth flowing plot and character motivation that is far beyond most other books in its' genre. Although it is seventeen years old, this book will capture the attention of readers of any age, and is still available in reprints and also in compendiums of all three chronicles. Amazon and Ebay both have this book appearing on their sites from time to time, and may even have the originals.
