Review:
The eighth Recluse novel, "The Chaos Balance" gives us the engineer/smith Nylan, a sole man among the leadership of the matriarchal "angels" marooned on Candor. Nylan just happens to be the one person who is most responsible for their survival, as well as the one person their leader hates the most for his refusal to play stud to the entire group of females. As more of the new members grow to distrust or dislike him, Nylan leaves his companions hoping to find a peaceful existence elsewhere on the extremist world.
Only two people go with him on his search for peace, Ayrlyn the healer/singer and his infant son. Candor, being male controlled is shocked at the angel's differences to them, and its people do little to help them. Worse yet is Nylan and Ayrlyn's skills are best used on the battlefield, and the society is ruled by constant violence, which makes such skills a valuable commodity. Instead of finding peace and harmony, they end up in yet another battle between order and chaos. Modesitt delightfully mixes magic to technology, bringing both together in a constantly changing fantasy. Though one of a series, it still holds it own as a novel, leaving you eager to find out what has, had and will happen to the angels of Candor.
