Review:
This book is the first of the Harper Hall Trilogy, and is part of the Dragonriders of Pern series.
Menolly, young daughter of Yanus Seaholder of Half Circle Sea Hold, is extremely gifted in the musical arts. The Harper Peitron encouraged her ability and talents as much as he could until his death. After he died, Menolly was given the task of teaching the children, with extreme reluctance on her fathers' part. With beatings for playing outside the classroom, and for playing her own songs at any time, she was forced not to sing at all until after the new Harper arrived. During that time, she cut her hand badly gutting fish. The injury nearly killed her, and afterward, she was given only menial tasks. When she couldn't take the injustice any more, she ran away to the cave where she had seen firelizards. In doing so, she began a new life. One of the better books I've read, I give it Three Claws Up.
