Review:
When Robinton was born to Master Singer Merelan and Master Composer Petiron at the Harper Hall, times were good on Pern. The feared and accursed Threads had not fallen as long as anyone could rememer, and most thought it was gone for good. With the spectacular voice and vocal range of his mother Merelan and the compositional talent of his father Petiron, noone doubted that young Robinton would also be somewhat gifted in music.
At the tender age of three turns, he had already taught himself to play the pipes and could compose rather sophisticated variations to popular songs, not to mention composing pieces of his own. The musical genius, for he was indeed that, had also sadly been exposed to the prejudice held against the Harpers. While on a trip with his family, young Robbie discovered that some people do not believe the teachings of the ballads sung by Harpers. Not only that, but some even say they sing lies and lure children away from their families with their evil songs. Another horrendous thing he has been exposed to lies in the character of his own father. Petiron is indifferent to his son, seeming to not notice and not care if Robinton is even there. When Petiron finally takes notice of Robbie's inherent musical ability, he acts as if he expects perfection from his son. However, when Robbie demonstrates the Ability to speak to dragons, and Hear dragons, all he knows takes a drastic change. A new and dangerous world opens to Robinton, a world full of adventure, dragons, and evil lurking around every corner. Can Robinton use his abilities and his good sense to survive this world and live to become the man everyone hoped he would become? I give this book 5 Stars, it's one of Anne McCaffrey's finest works and my personal Favorite.
