Review: I read A Kiss of Shadows while waiting for the rest of the Anita Blake series to come in the mail. I honestly didn't know what to expect, I thought it would be a cheesy novel that she wrote to please her fans in between her other series.

A Kiss of Shadows introduces Merry Gentry, a.k.a. Meredith NicEssus, a faerie princess of the Unseelie Court, where politics is a blood sport. Merry, who's part sidhe (elvish), part brownie, and part human, never really fit in. She's short, not skilled in offensive magic, and mortal because of her human blood. These are real liabilities when your family, especially aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, is out to kill you. Merry has been in hiding for three years, living in Los Angeles and working for the Grey Detective Agency, which specializes in "supernatural problems, magical solutions." A new case sets her against a man who uses forbidden magic to seduce fey women and drain their power. A plan to trap him goes awry and Merry's cover is blown. Now Andais knows where she is. But things have changed in Andais's court, and Merry is changing too.

I must warn people, there is a lot of sexual things in this book. So if you're under 18, don't read it! I'm not easily scared off and you can just ignore those parts if you choose so I'd do that if I were you and were going to read this. Look past that and you'll see a good story.

You can see the resemblance between Merry and Anita Blake, the heroine of Ms Hamilton's other series (go check out my reviews of the first four novels of that series in the horror section). Both are short, pretty, tough, intelligent and they both possess powers that they don't know about or just don't want to acknowledge.

I also like the fact that in both this series and the Anita Blake one, she makes us believe in her make-believe worlds. It's as if we're kids again and of COURSE fairys, goblins, etc are real!

There is one major drawback to the book, it ends in a cliffhanger and us fans have to wait forever to read the next one (rumours are not even out about it yet, IF there's even a next one). So we have to wait and read this one over and over again, which I'm not really complaining about.
