Review:
The last of the reference books I found as I started to reread The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and now, The Lost Tales, this one was unique. The Hilenbrandt brothers, Greg and Tim, are illustrators of just about everything Tolkien. Their first real publication of their work was the 1976 Tolikien Calendar.
This soft bound book is a look into the workd of J.R.R. Tolkien through their eyes as painters and illustrators. Having never seen their work previously, and being very caught up in the designs and concepts of John Howe and Alan Lee, it was initially difficult to see the Tolkien world in this very different light. But as I read through the book, and learned to appreciate the process they went through in order to produce such detailed illustrations, I did come to enjoy their concepts of Tolkien's world. I am sure many who had never read the books "way back when" or only have seen the movies will not be as impressed with the Hildebrandt's style. That is perfectly fine, as all art is based on the individual's intertretation of a given subject. Regardless of whose artistic endeavors you prefer, this is still a good book to have on hand and appreciate the many years of hard work and talent that went into the beautiful pictures and paintings that are printed here for your enjoyment.
