An effective follow-up to "The Shadows of Avalon". The characterization is well done, the plot compact and well paced and the narrative flows easily. The Doctor comes across well: I enjoyed his dialogue and thought his character was well captured. The ramifications for Compassion as a result of events in the previous novel were followed up on; this promises to lead into ever-more interesting stories. The horror in this story is that we KNOW the planet will be destroyed in a terrible fashion. It's simply a case of who will survive and how. The tension is maintained throughout and it's an enjoyable story.
