This novel is set shortly after the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie. The Doctor, newly regenerated into his eighth incarnation, looses his memory, thanks to a trap set by his old enemy, the Master. He must revisit his past incarnations in order for him to recover his memory. This novel, by long-time Who writer Terrance Dicks, is a good starter for the BBC books series. It fleshes out the Eighth Doctor's personality by contrasting him with the previous Doctors. This is done in such a way as to provide entertainment for the established Who fans and to enlighten newcomers. The story is fun, the settings wide ranging and the Doctor even gains a new travelling companion, Sam. All in all, a satisfying read that leads to greater things to come.
