Synopsis: Alfred Bester is born with PSI ability, and grows up inside the Corps where he is different, even from his own cadre'. He wants to be the best there is and devotes his whole life to accomplish that goal. One day he makes a mistake when he decides to go after a blip on his own and almost dies. One of his own kind saves him and helps him develop skills that cannot be learned from books.
Review: Al Bester grows up in Cadre' Prime, with other kids that have had psi-abilities since they where born. He doesn’t seem to fit in. He would rather spend time reading and thinking. But the grins and the teachers are always there to make sure that everyone learns what the Corps stands for. The Corps is father, the Corps is mother. All in the Corps are your family members, brothers and sisters. And you should help each other see this.
This second book in the trilogy is a great book. In the first, we got to know the resistance and now we get the opportunity to grow up in the Corps. To get a feeling how it would be to be Psi Corps material. And how it is for latent telepaths to come to teeptown. Important things are told, but not all mysteries are explained. I wonder what happens to the latent kids in the basements for instance. If you wonder what it would like to be born with this gift, and the Corps would hear of it. Then this is the book to read.
