When I started reading this one, I didn't realize The Second Assassin was a true story, taking place in spring/summer, 1939!

The King and Queen of England are going to pay a state visit to Canada and the United States. There are certain people in the government and the private sector who are convinced that President Roosevelt is preparing to take the United States into the war in Europe with Hitler. And they will do anything to stop that from happening.

The introduction of the characters is so well done, it is hard to believe that they are real people. We have a tough newspaper reporter, a woman who chain smokes and never gives up. Two representatives from the UK, a Scotland Yard detective and an intelligence agent. Into this mix you meet some members of the IRA who are, or maybe aren't involved, and an assassin or 2. You actually meet a young Frank Sinatra (that was a surprise) at the scene of a murder that is the tip of the iceberg and the kick-off to the whole story.

The amazing aspect of this book is that it takes place in a real time and real people are integral parts of it. There are specific dates and places and people that, if you know your history, you will recognize. And the implications of what might have happened, as opposed to what did happen give the reader something to think about.

This book is part history lesson, part murder/mystery, with a little romance and comedy thrown in, not for special effect, but because it is how real people acted in that time and those places. The book takes place from New York to Ireland to London, New Orleans, Detroit, Washington DC, Alberta, Canada and Havana, Cuba.

So pack your passport, bring your camera, and take a trip back before WWII and see what might have happened if all these bits and pieces and people hadn't come together at this time and place.
