Remember the Horta (big rock-like aliens that Spock mind-melded with in TOS)? Well, this story is plotted mostly around them in this story.

One particular Horta named Ttan and her brood of 20 Horta eggs, are on their way to Deep Space 9 to negotiate with the Bajorans. They want to help them with the Bajoran struggling mining industry. On the way to DS9, the big bad Cardassians kidnap the mother Horta, and try to take her eggs too. Lucky for them, Sisko manages to rescue the eggs before they do.

Thisis another early DS9 season story - once more the main participants are the Bajorans and the Cardassians. When Major Kira, along with Dr. Bashir go off on a reacue mission to find Ttan on a Cardassian moon which is being mined for Latinum, they also find that the Horta is not the only captive. The original rescue mission turns out to be more complicated than when it first started when they find out the Cardassians are also holding Bajoran prisoners.

Meanwhile, on DS9, they are having problems of their own when the baby Hortas hatch on board the station thanks mainly to Nog, who, as usual, drags young Jake Sisko into his scheme to try and make money.

Soon, the station is overrun with hungry baby Hortas who feed on the station itself. The crew have to frantically try to find a way to control them before they destroy DS9.

Not a bad story and is quite entertaining in parts, especially with Odo and O'Brien trying to keep the baby Hortas out of mischief, and keep track of them before they eat the whole station. We also get to look into the mind of the distraught Mother Horta, whose only concern is for her babies, which is very touching.
