Behind Enemy Lines is the first in the four part series of books ‘The Dominion War’. This first book is written by John Vornholt and focuses on the exploits of the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise-E. The war is going badly for the Federation. Her starships, too outnumbered to meet the Dominion forces in pitched fleet engagements, have split up and are fighting desperate delaying and hit and run actions to try and hold back the enemy. Patrolling alone, the Enterprise responds to a distress call to discover a Bajor transport commanded by none other than Ro Laren, formerly an officer aboard the Enterprise before her defection to the Maquis. Ro has some disturbing news for Picard. The Dominion are building an artificial wormhole deep behind their lines. If they manage to complete it and bring through reinforcements from the Gamma quadrant, the already overstretched Federation will be finished. Determined to do something to stop this, Picard sets out with Ro Laren, Geordi LaForge and a handpicked young crew to try and stop the Dominion from completing the wormhole. However what can they possibly do in a lightly armed Bajoran transport? Meanwhile another former member of the Enterprise crew is already at the wormhole, as a prisoner. Like many thousands of other Federation and allied prisoners, Lieutenant Sam Lavelle is being forced to work as slave labour. When he is offered the chance to command a tanker sent to mine a precious metal vital to the projects completion, Lavelle senses a chance for freedom and a chance to stop the Dominions evil plan. I enjoyed this book because it offered a different perspective on the Dominion war and it filled in the blank of what the TNG crew were doing during the conflict. This book form's a two-parter with the third book of the Dominion war series and I cannot wait to read it. Exciting, fast paced and filled with interesting characters such as Ferengi pirates and Romulan Hijackers, I gave "Behind Enemy Lines" 5 stars out of 5.
