Congratulations on suffering through The Return! Your persistance shall be rewarded. Avenger is the third in a trilogy of books written by William Shatner to explore the life of James T. Kirk after death. Having been brought back from the dead in The Return, we have adequate setup for this: Captain Picard and crew, aboard the Enterprise-E, are patrolling the border. A horrible virus has spread to several major Federation outposts, and is poisoning the food. Starfleet has ordered a quarantine of the outposts, and the Enterprise-E has the job of enforcing it.
Meanwhile, a mysterious figure comes to one of the infected planets, and brings with him a medicine that cures the virus. Low and behold, it is none other that James T. Kirk! From there the story picks up, as Kirk tries to establish a life free from Star Fleet and technology. This is not to be so. Picard runs into Kirk, Kirk into Spock, and eventually, a plot worthy of Star Trek emerges. Murders going back in history, conspiracies, and good ol' 'Shoot first and ask questions later' attitude makes this a great book.
I have read a good portion of Shatner's writing, both Trek and Tek. This is good. Very good. If you enjoy the TOS movies, then this is the next step in the development of the characters, stories, and helps to bridge the gap between generations. A must-read to any Kirk fan.
