War Dragons is the first book of the series, and describes the stories told by Captain Kirk and Captain Sulu. The story starts with Sulu’s first command, the Excelsior, and the new ship’s first mission. That first mission was to deliver a dozen of the new Starfleet reconnaissance ships, FL-70 Falcons, from Deep-Space three to the Neutral Zone. In that time there was still tension between the federation and the Klingon Empire, and the Falcons were needed to relieve some of that tension.
While the Falcons are transported to the Excelsior, the ship and station fall under attack. Crippling the station, the aliens advance to kidnap a few crewmembers, and escape with some of the Falcons.
Kirk’s past experience with these aliens, as told in his past of the story, incorporated with Sulu’s present story, lead to Kirk’s involvement in Sulu’s present day story, as together they try to rescue the hostages and retrieve the Falcons.
The glimpse into Sulu’s command, and his first mission are a novelty idea, but Kirk’s shadowing Sulu, as a chaperon, takes the edge off and lessens the effect. Sulu proves a worthy captain, by himself, and Kirk, well Kirk stays Kirk.
Enjoyable. Recommended to Sulu’s fans.
