This time the focus is on a young woman, Lieutenant Piper, fresh out of the academy. After almost checkmating the no-win scenario, the Kobiyashi Maru, she is requested by Captain Kirk to be posted aboard his ship. Only hours later, a top secret dreadnought, the only one of its kind, is stolen by a faction inside Starfleet.

The people that have taken the new ship, called Star Empire, ask for the Enterprise to meet with them to talk terms. Conditions are sent, specifying that Piper clear the message with her biocode. Captain Kirk puts Piper under Computer Arrest in her quarters. She escapes, and tries to go to the stolen starship, with a Vulcan, Lieutenant Sarda, whom she knew in the Academy.

Vice Admiral Rittenhouse tractors her Arco attack sled into his own ship, and stops her from going to talk with the supposed traitors. He plans on making himself a benevolent dictator, and Piper, with the help of her friends plan on stopping him, as he plots to overthrow the Federation.

There is plenty of action in this book, and some humor, as I expect from Diane Carey, a wonderful and prolific writer of Star Trek novels and Episodes. Please read this book, as you will never forgive yourself if you don’t!
