What happened to the legendary crew of the Starship Enterprise following her last mission in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country"? That question has plagued the minds of fans for years. Following in the steps of such great books as "Best Destiny" and "Shadows on the Sun" comes "The Fearful Summons".

Out in the vast wilderness expanses of the final frontier, the "USS Excelsior charts new solar systems and explores for new life far fromthe vast stretches of Federation Space.

Unbeknownst to them, an old, tattered freighter looms in the distance with a crew of greedy aliens who call themselves the Prometheans, bent on capturing the Excelsior and her "large store of precious cargo." The Sundew, as this ragtag freighter was called in its' heyday, moves out into deep space and signals distress.

By intergalactic law, the Excelsior is bound to reply to these calls for help, and soon the massive starship leaps to their assistance. Upon their arrival, they find the Sundew in a state of worsening condition. Their captain is demanding that the Excelsior beam them aboard, but we all know that Captain Sulu is smarter than that. He accompanies a group of engineers and staff to the freighter to affect repairs.

Whoops!

As the transporter releases Sulu and his landing party from the beam that took them to the freighter, their would-be distressed ship comes to life, and they are taken hostage.

In the ensuing chaos surrounding the caprute of eleven Starfleet officers, Excelsior looses the Sundew in a field of asteroids and spatial debris.

In the meantime.....

James T. Kirk, formerly of the USS Enterprise, is becoming bored with retirement. His all-to-often lecturing at the Academy, and the excessive nag and drag of time is slowing him down. Soon, though, he receives word of the captured officers, one of whom he has a long friendship with.

Our old and devious hero starts to look up some old and devious friends...

This space adventure journeys across the galaxy and we see a side of Captain Kirk that no one could ever see on the Enterprise. Leaping through the proverbial ring of fire, can James T. Kirk save his former collegue and friend?
