It started in 1994 when the First Edition of Star Trek Encyclopedia - A Reference Guide to the Future hit bookshelves across the world. The three-decade saga, Star Trek was finally put together in this one astonishing book filled with information on everything you could imagine. From 'audet IX to Zytchin III, all of the imagination that has filled our lives with hope for the future of mankind.
But in 1997 a Second Edition dropped out of warp into our homes and into our lives. This new edition came with full-color photos and extremely detailed accounts of the title character's lives and times. New sections for Star Trek: First Contact and the latest seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager were added to help illustrate the changing face of this endearing pop culture icon.
Then in 1999 after Star Trek: Insurrection came out, a Third Edition decloaked, bringing us the most up to date details of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. This new book brought forth the wrenching details of the Dominion War and the little-known details of whatever happened to our three favorite Klingons from Star Trek, Kor, Koloth, and Kang.
I have bought all three editions, and each of them holds their own value very well. Basically all that has changed is an appendix towards the end of the book. The second edition is essentially repeated and at the end, right after the 'Z' index ends, a new section 'A' starts with the updates. 128 pages of new articles, pictures, starships, and indexes are added. Throughout this appendix you can easily flip to just about anything you want to find. Well, almost anything. I looked for a long time, but I just didn't see Jeri Ryan's telephone number!
Now, let me tell you about some of the features in this stunning book. Below I've set up a little list for you to go over. Full color photos for over 1,000 characters, ships, planets, star bases, weapons, and other various stuff.
Planetary and other spatial objects index. With this great index you can look up which planet was in what episode!
Starship index. All of the ships that have been officially designated and defined throughout the Star Trek world are featured in this list.
Warp conversion chart. With this chart you can experiment with how fast a warp engine goes. Who knew that warp nine was actually 1,516 times the speed of light!
And of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Dedication plaques, bridge pictures, starship size comparison charts, episode guides, character guides, timelines, and much much more. Go take a look for yourself!
