The Enterprise's latest voyage has brought them out into a harsh new frontier swarming with hostile alien cultures bent on taking the wealth of the Quake Moon for their own. Captain Kirk's mission is to protect the Quasar Olivium that could be pivotal in advancing technology by decades, even if it means sacrificing the lives of 60,000 people.

But while the Enterprise is out on patrol protecting the Belle Terre system; Chekov, Uhura, Sulu, and Scotty are on a mission of their own: to help a determined band of pioneers colonize a harsh and unforgiving world and to defend the vulnerable settlers from the constant threat of an alien invasion, but what do they do when the settlers don't want help?

Chekov has crash-landed in the middle of a unique dust storm that covers the body in lethal amounts of radiation burns. How can he survive, and how will Uhura, Sulu, and Scotty ever find him when sensors and communication don't even work? Amongst all this turmoil, there is a plot brewing that might endanger the lives of everyone in the colony.

This book is much darker than the two previous books, but it gives a detailed insight into the lives and times of these determined colonists. It gets 3 Pips.
