Chasing the notorious pirate Auk-rex into unchartered space, the USS Enterprise rendezvouses with Sanctuary, a M class paradise of a planet, which provides shelter to both the justly and unjustly persecuted of the galaxy.

Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy follow the dreaded criminal to the surface of the planet, only to find Auk-rex, crash and have their shuttlecraft stolen by Senites, a mysterious, indegenious, and androgynous life form whose only purpose of existence is to serve the persecuted. The Enterprise away team realizes that a trip to Sanctuary is "one way" and they are now trapped with no shuttle and functional equipment as the transport and communication signals from the Enterprise can't reach them.

They make another startling discovery - like the Borg, the senites don't reproduce, but are bred with the same persecutors the senites so eagerly serve as unwilling subjects. Kirk, Spock and McCoy are drugged and are about to be 'reborn', as the process is called, when they are rescued by Renna, the daughter of Auk-rex. They escape with some others and reach the graveyard of ships, where their stolen shuttle is. There they realize that there is a senite shield 30 km up in the atmosphere which repels driven flight and that escape in a shuttle is impossible.

True to his character, Spock comes up with the brilliant idea of escaping the senite shield in a gas ballon from where the Enterprise could beam them. The subplot is provided by Mr Scott commanding the Enterprise which is orbiting Sanctuary with a Klingon, Orion and other vessels from various species, most of whom are bounty hunters, and Enterprises's interactions with them in effort to save the away team.

Overall, an interesting and captivating book. I give the book 4 marks out of 5.
