This thrilling read twines together three different plot lines into one well-balanced book. Sarek, suspicious of a plot against the Federation, seeks the secrets of an old friend - Taryn, a Freelan, with whom a game of chess is more than just that. Peter Kirk, nephew to the legendary James T. Kirk, is in his final year at the Academy. Amanda Greyson, Spock's mother and wife to Sarek, is dying of Ryerson's Disease. And Valdyr, a young Klingon woman, is desperate to retain her family's homor despite the actions of her uncle. These all join the Enterprise's crew in a rousing read.
The "Keep Earth Human League" (KEHL) has become a larger and more vocal voice than ever before. Sarek believes that the surge in growth of the KEHL is due in part to "influencing" mind control exerted by the shrouded Freelans. While Sarek is away from Vulcan, collecting proof as to who and what the Freelans are behind their cloaks, Amanda worsens and dies. Angered that his father was not with his mother in her final moments, when all Amanda was aware of was the absence of Sarek, the ever-present rift between father and son seems to widen.
Peter Kirk, in his last days at Starfleet Academy, runs afoul of the KHEL, and is abducted in a plot to murder James T. Kirk. This leads a Commando team of Kirk, McCoy and Spock to the surface of Qo'Nos and the unusual relationship that has developed between Peter and Valdyr. Thwarted is the attempt of Valdyr's uncle to immerse the Federation in war, and his side project of killing the remaining Kirks. Working together at last, Sarek and Spock save the galaxy from war, and rescues waifs and strays of their own kind.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the plot twists enjoyable and unexpected. Particularly enjoyable were the diary entries that Sarek read of Amanda's. This leads to a greater understanding of the history and legend behind Sarek, Spock and Vulcans in general. A Keeper in any collection.
