Spectre is the first book in a second series of books dealing with the life of Kirk after Generations. Some people can never die. Spectre opens up with James T. Kirk back on Earth, for the first time since the launch of the Enterprise-B. He is attending a party for people who have traveled through time. Scotty, the crew of the Bozeman, and many others are there. 'Course something bad happened and Kirk gets kidnapped. Through the looking glass...

Ever wonder about the mirror universe? Of course Deep Space Nine had an episode on it, but that hardly covers what happens. In Mirror Mirror, Kirk said, "In every revolution, there is a man with a vision. Be that man!" But we never know if Commandant Spock took that advice. Now we do. The fate of the Terran Empire, the rule of Emperor Tiberius the first, worst, most brutal, and only Emperor of the Terran Empire; but "Conquest is easy. Control is not."

Picard and the E become tangled in a web of ghosts, duplicates, conspiracies. These are in turn tied to Kirk. The stakes are raised when Kirk's wife becomes a pawn, and soon the life of his child is at risk. Again.

A tale that will keep you guessing and wondering to the very, very, very end. Interesting, but not very good. I thought it was so-so. Overall, I would say that as a book, its literary merit is nil, but as medication to a Kirk-addict, it will satisfy. Read it to get the background on the final book of the series.
