If you haven't read Spectre, then forget reading this. Dark Victory starts off where Spectre left. From here, we get the conclusion to Spectre. I shall omit that for the sake of those who want the suprise.

After the beginning, Dark Victory follows Kirk back to his new home on the Planet Chal, with his wife Teliani. It is their wedding day, and everyone has turned out. McCoy, Spock, Scotty, Kirk's relatives, everyone except the crew of the Enterprise-E. It is a wonderful event, right up to the end when Teliani is poisoned. Her assailant is unknown, but Kirk thinks Starfleet knows what is going on. Teliani has only days to live, so Kirk and Spock get the Sovereign to take them to the Klingon Homeowrld, where they hope to find a cure for Teliani.

En route, the Enterprise intercepts them, and Picard offers Kirk some information about the situation. Kirk finally agrees to join Starfleet again, and in a love/hate relationship with Picard, they set out to help Teliani. With more conspiracies by a makeshipft Section 31, a trip to the mirror universe, and finally a deal with the devil himself. Kirk does what he must to save his bride.

This book is better then Spectre, by far, and builds up to the final book in this series, Preserver. I would recommend it only to people who have read the other books in this series, otherwise it will make no sense. Literary merit is medium, and Trek merit high.
