Synopsis: Somewhere in the galaxy, millions suddenly perish - a disruption in the Force that is so shocking it is felt by Luke at the Jedi Academy, and by Leia on Coruscant. While Leia must cope with an assassination attemp in the Senate, a rumored plot against the New Republic, and allegations that Han Solo is involved, Luke seeks out a former student who may hold the key to the mass destruction. But Brakiss is only the bait in a deadly trap set by a Master of the Dark Side who is determined to rule as a second and stronger Emperor. He's targeted Luke, Leia and Leia's Jedi children to die. Then billions will follow, in a holocaust unequaled in galactic history.

Review: This is the story of a young pupil who allowed himself to be led astray. The powers of the Dark Side succeded in tempting Brakiss and Kueller to the Dark Side of the Force. Luke is on a mision to not only find out who is behind the destruction of an entire race, but to find out why. The story starts off with Kueller and Brakiss while Kueller begins to plan for the destruction of an entire civilization. This is a show of power, that the balance has shifted and he has to be in control.

On Yavin 4, Luke is teaching his students one of the early tricks that Master Yoda had used with him. Luke has several boulders, R2D2 and several logs floating in the air when he feels the explosion and then the great silence in the Force. This disturbance causes Luke to loose concentration and his balance, sending him, R2, all the boulders and logs crashing to the ground.

At almost the exact same time, Leia feels the disruption whle she is preparing for a meeting with new members of the New Republic Senate. There is a massive explosion in the Senate Chambers, Leia barely escapes major injury and as she rushes to aid the injured, feels the disturbance and a rush of emotion as Luke tells her he is on his way to Coruscant. All this happens as Han is talking with an old friend and finds out that his old stomping ground, Smugglers Run, needs protection from some huge evil force.

The writing style that the author used in this story is one of the best I have seen in a long time. She doesn't bounce back and forth in the same chapter; what she does is move forward to the same people in the chapter. I do feel that this book is a "must read" for any Star Wars fan because it sets you up for some of the later books. I will not go into further detail so you can find out the full plot of this entire story as it unfolds in Kristine Kathryn Rusch's Star Wars: The New Rebellion.
